Profile America — Wednesday, June 17th. With the first weekend of summer coming up, it’s a good bet that many people will be cleaning up their fishing rods and reels, checking their lures and buying some bait to go fishing. While avid fishermen go out all year long, summer sees increased activity on the nation’s rivers, lakes and at the ocean. Fishing is one of the most popular activities in the U.S., enjoyed by nearly 34 million adults. More than eight-out-of-10 fish in freshwater, while the remainder prefer the ocean. Going fishing ranges from dipping a line for a few hours after work to expensive week long trips complete with a guide. Each year, fishermen in the U.S. spend more than $24 million on equipment and fishing licenses. Those who go on fishing trips spend another $18 million annually. Profile America is in its 13th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
