Profile America — Sunday, November 15th. One of the nation’s most revered artists — Georgia O’Keefe, was born on this date in 1887 at Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. She married noted photographer Alfred Steiglitz, who introduced her to the New York art scene and staged exhibitions of her drawings. With her innovative style, she quickly became one of the most important artists of the 1920s. She spent much of her life in New Mexico, fascinated with the colors and forms of the desert, which she reflected in her work. Georgia O’Keefe painted until close to her death at the age of 98. There are 227,000 professional artists in the U.S., just over half of them women. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau online at <www.census.gov>.
