Profile America — Monday, October 19th. A familiar figure is being seen at events all around the country this month — McGruff, the “Take A Bite Out Of Crime” mascot, symbolizing National Crime Prevention Month. The trench coat-wearing pup is an engaging way to focus attention on a deadly serious, ongoing battle against all sorts of crime ranging from simple theft, to stealing cars, to murder. The goal of this special month is to get each of us to become part of the effort on at least one of three levels — within our own family, the neighborhood in which we live and in our greater community. Each year across the U.S., there are more than 1.4 million violent crimes and some 10 million property crimes. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau online at <www.census.gov>.
