ANR starts here:
NARRATOR: HISPANICS HAVE MADE HEADLINES IN THE LAST DECADE MAINLY BECAUSE OF THEIR SKYROCKETING POPULATION GROWTH. RECENT CENSUS BUREAU FIGURES SHOW THAT NEARLY 1-IN-EVERY-8 PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY IS HISPANIC. LOUIS KINCANNON, DIRECTOR OF THE U.S. CENSUS BUREAU.
Louis Kincannon, Director, U.S. Census Bureau
“Growth of the Hispanic population is happening throughout the country. Not just in the traditional states of immigration.”
NARRATOR" THIS DRAMATIC GROWTH IS TRANSLATING INTO MORE THAN JUST POPULATION FIGURES, CURRENTLY THERE ARE 24 HISPANIC-AMERICANS IN CONGRESS COMPARED WITH ONLY 12 IN 1990.
Arturo Vargas, Executive Director, National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO)
"Our government is based on population numbers. That’s why the census exists. And, what we’ve tried to do in the Latino community is to convert those numbers into political representation."
NARRATOR: THE CENSUS BUREAU DATA REFLECT THE EVER-INCREASING IMPACT OF THE HISPANIC POPULATION ON AMERICAN SOCIETY — AN IMPACT THAT WE SEE NOT JUST IN POPULATION GROWTH, BUT ALSO IN POLITICS, BUSINESS, FOOD, ART AND MUSIC.
