What is QuickFacts?

QuickFacts is an easy to use application that shows tables, maps, and charts of frequently requested statistics from more than ten Census Bureau censuses, surveys, and programs. Profiles are available for the nation, all 50 states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and all counties. Cities and towns with a population of 5,000 or more are also included.

How do I begin?

QuickFacts begins in TABLE view with data shown for the UNITED STATES. You can change to MAP view, CHART view, or the DASHBOARD, which shows all three views at once.

How do I “Enter state, county, city, town, or zip code?”

Begin typing the name of the geography or zip code. After the third character, a list of choices will appear on the drop down. Locate and select your area by single-clicking the mouse or by using the up and down arrows and then pressing the Enter/Return key. The Enter/Return key may also be used if only one geography appears or your highlighted selection is at the top of the list. This becomes your selected geography and is added to the TABLE in the first data column, moving UNITED STATES to the second data column.

Why are some cities, towns or zip codes missing in the dropdown menu?

Areas with populations below 5,000 are not currently shown in QuickFacts.

How do I “SELECT A FACT?”

Simply click on SELECT A FACT to show the dropdown list, which is grouped by topic. Scroll down to highlight the FACT you want and click on the FACT to select it. In addition, you can double click on the row of the FACT in the TABLE.

How do I narrow the results?

In TABLE view, click ALL TOPICS and select the topic you want. The table view will show only facts for that topic. To view all facts again, select All Topics.
In MAP view, you can further narrow results down to counties, county subdivisions, or places by choosing a level from the BROWSE BY dropdown. The map will switch to browse mode. Click on a geography and set it as primary. The map will automatically switch back to data mode showing each of the geographies at that level color-coded according to their fact data value.
In CHART view, you can toggle between all sibling geographies or geographies that you have selected via the ALL LOCATIONS dropdown.
In DASHBOARD view, you can narrow down only what facts are showing by using the ALL TOPICS dropdown, as indicated above.

What is the primary geography?

Primary geography is the geography shown in the first data column in TABLE view, first row on Selected Locations in CHART view and it is outlined in red in MAP view. MAP and CHART views show all siblings of the primary geography, i.e. if a county in Virginia is the selected Primary geography, MAP and CHART views show all counties in Virginia.

You can change the primary geography in several ways:

The “Enter state, county, city, town or zip code” search box is available throughout the application. Type a geography's name or zip code. After 3 characters, you will see the matching available choices. Make your selection. This geography is now your primary geography. It will be added automatically into the first column on TABLE view, Selected Locations on CHART view, and outlined in red on MAP view.
In CHART view, click on a geography row. On the popup, click SET AND VIEW to make that geography primary. It will be added automatically into the first column on TABLE view, Selected Locations on CHART view, and outlined in red on MAP view.
In MAP view, click on a geography. On the popup, click SET AND VIEW to make that geography primary. It will be added automatically into the first column on TABLE view, Selected Locations on CHART view, and outlined in red on MAP view.
In DASHBOARD view, all of the above described actions can be used to select a geography as primary.

NOTE: When you launch QuickFacts, or click CLEAR all selections, the UNITED STATES is the primary geography. Because there are no sibling geographies to the UNITED STATES, MAP and CHART views default to all states.

In TABLE view, how many geographies can I see?

Six is the maximum number of geographies you can see in TABLE view - the primary geography in the first column and up to 5 non-primary geographies. To add non-primary geographies use the search box to the right in TABLE view. If there are more than one geographies present, you may delete geographies by clicking . A red circle on the TABLE icon indicates the total number of geographies currently selected and is visible throughout the application.

In MAP view, how many geographies can I see? Can I zoom in and see data?

You will see your primary geography outlined in red and all sibling geographies, which are color-coded to show the five data ranges in the legend. For example, if you selected a county as a primary geography, you will see all the counties in that state.

You can view data for counties, county subdivisions, or places by choosing a level from the BROWSE BY dropdown. The map will switch to browse mode. Click on a geography and set it as primary. The map will automatically switch back to data mode showing each of the geographies at that level color-coded according to their fact data value.

In MAP view, what is DATA MODE?

This is the default map mode where each geography's data value is indicated by color that corresponds to a range. Hover over or click on a geography to see the actual data value.

In MAP view, what is BROWSE BY?

Making a selection from the BROWSE BY dropdown list switches the map to "browse" mode. "Browse" mode shows the map in black and white so that it's visually different from the default "data" mode.

Use this as a reference map. It shows all available sibling geographies for the selected level (state, counties, county subdivisions, or places). Hover over or click on a geography to see it's name. NOTE: If you select county subdivisions from the BROWSE BY dropdown but the parent state of the primary geography does not have any county subdivisions, an alert will be displayed and counties will be shown instead.

While in browse mode, click on a geography and set it as primary (click SET AND VIEW) or non-primary (click ADD TO TABLE). If you set a new primary geography, the map will switch to data mode automatically. If you select a new non-primary geography, the geography will be added to TABLE view and Selected Locations in CHART view but the map will not switch to data mode.

While in browse mode, you can drag the map. Geographies of the selected level will then be shown for the parent state that falls within the viewfinder .

NOTE: If the primary geography is the UNITED STATES, making a selection from BROWSE BY will show geographies of the selected level for the state located at the center of the map. By default, that state is Colorado.

In MAP view, why is the map going to Colorado?

If the primary geography is the UNITED STATES, making a selection from BROWSE BY will show geographies of the selected level for the state located at the center of the map. By default, that state is Colorado for counties/municipios and places.

If the primary geography is not the UNITED STATES, making a selection from BROWSE BY will show geographies of the selected level for the parent state of the primary geography.

In CHART view, how many geographies can I see? Can I see data?

You will see your primary geography highlighted along with all sibling geographies. For example, if you selected a state, you will see all the states, plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico (at the bottom). Hover over or click on each bar in the CHART to see the actual data value.

In DASHBOARD view, how many geographies can I see?

DASHBOARD view is a combination of all three views.

DASHBOARD TABLE shows fact data only for the primary geography.
On DASHBOARD TABLE you cannot add a non-primary geography.
DASHBOARD CHART shows data for the primary geography and all its siblings, same as the expanded CHART view. Selected Locations dropdown is not available on DASHBOARD CHART.
DASHBOARD MAP shows data for the primary geography and all its siblings, same as the expanded MAP view. BROWSE BY dropdown is not available on DASHBOARD MAP.

Where can I get data for other levels of geography, like metropolitan areas?

While not available in QuickFacts profiles, there are a number of sources on census.gov for data about metropolitan areas.

How can I browse more datasets for my selected location?

Whenever you see an orange magnifying glass , click it for all the detailed links to other datasets.

Can I share data from QuickFacts?

Yes. The DOWNLOAD menu item opens a popup where you have options to PRINT, DOWNLOAD, CSV, EMAIL, EMBED, and post on TWITTER, FACEBOOK and PINTEREST.

What do these icons mean and what happens when I click them?

Click for additional information such as Sources, Definitions, and sometimes Margins of Error, or More Information.

Click for all the detailed links to other sets of data about the respective geography.

Click to set the application to its default state. This will remove all selected geographies and begin a new search. Your prior searches and results will not be saved.

Click to open the popup for all the download and share options.

When in DASHBOARD view, click this icon to go to expanded TABLE, expanded MAP, or expanded CHART view.

In TABLE view, click this icon to delete a geography.
