Monthly survey assignments vary from 20 hours to 60 hours or more a month and typically involve personal interviews along with some phone interviews. To meet deadlines, our Field Reps must be available to work when respondents are at home -- usually during evening hours and on weekends -- but sometimes daytime hours as well. The irregular hours and need for flexibility mean this position does not match well with a full-time job or a typical student workload. A large part of the job involves meeting and dealing with the public. While most people are quite cooperative, a certain percentage will require salesmanship and customer service skills before they participate. We have found that a person who enjoys meeting and talking to new people and has good time-management skills will most likely succeed as a Field Representative. In addition, the surveys we conduct provide the basis for good decision-making for communities, businesses, non-profits, and all levels of government, thus providing an important service as well. In summary, this is a challenging but rewarding position.
