At work or out of work? Since 1942, the Census Bureau has asked employment questions for the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the Current Population Survey. The monthly unemployment rate - a principal economic indicator - comes from the 60,000 households that we survey each month. We also get employment information from many of our economic surveys.
