Field Representative (FR)

  • This is a part-time position conducting survey interviews in community settings
  • Respondents have been randomly selected and are pre-notified
  • Starting hourly pay ranges from $11.34 to $13.61, depending on location
  • The vehicle allowance is 55 cents a mile (effective 1-09)
  • Paid training includes 3 to 5 days, depending on the survey
  • FRs are eligible for benefits after 2 years if conditions warrant
Requirements include
  • U.S. citizenship
  • English proficiency
  • Availability for daytime, evening, and weekend work
  • A reliable vehicle, valid drivers license, and private landline home phone
  • Pass 30 minute written test of basic skills
  • Passing a background check

Monthly survey assignments vary from 20 hours to 60 hours or more a month and typically involve personal interviews along with some phone interviews. To meet deadlines, our Field Reps must be available to work when respondents are at home -- usually during evening hours and on weekends – but sometimes daytime hours as well. The irregular hours and need for flexibility mean this position does not match well with a full-time job or heavy student workload. A large part of the job involves meeting and dealing with the public. While most people are quite cooperative, a certain percentage will require salesmanship and customer service skills before they participate. We have found that a person who enjoys meeting and talking to new people and has good time-management skills will most likely succeed as a Field Representative. In addition, the surveys we conduct provide the basis for good decision-making for communities, businesses, non-profits, and all levels of government, thus providing an important service as well. In summary, this is a challenging but rewarding position.
