Thanks to our 3,086 southern New Jersey partners, who helped make Census 2000 a success.

New Jersey

  • New Jersey, "The Garden State," has 21 counties and 13 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

  • New Jersey had a population of 7,747,750 million in 1990 and a mail response rate of 65%. In 2000, the response rate was 68%. Currently ranked the 9th most populous state in the United States, Census 2000 shows that New Jersey's population has grown to 8,414,350.

  • Dramatic population growth in the last decade means Census 2000 figures will have a tremendous impact on the allocation of resources and the distribution of federal dollars for a decade.

  • Census 2000 figures will determine New Jersey's political representation in Congress and its annual share of more than $185 billion dollars to be distributed every year for the next ten years. Money for schools, day care, health care, jobs, new businesses and housing development is only a sampling of what's at stake.
