2001 Panel Waves 1, 4, 5, 6, and 9 Longitudinal Labor Force Core User Note

Statement of the Problem:

For some people, a problem in the survey instrument involving the translation of the starting and ending dates of their jobs and businesses into a weeks-worked pattern, may have adversely affected the data for the following variables and recodes, which depend upon this pattern:

ELKWRK (looking for work)
EWKLKG01-18 (weeks looking for work)
EWKSWK01-18 (weeks with a job/business)
EHRSWK01-18 (hours worked in each week)
ELAYOFF (on layoff)
EWKSAB01-18 (weeks absent without pay)
EWKESR01-18 (weekly employment status)
EWKWJB01-18 (number of weeks with a job/business/other work arrangement)
RM1-4WKWJB (monthly recode for number of weeks with a job/business/other work arrangement)
RM1-4WKSAB (monthly recode for number of weeks absent from a job or business)
RM1-4WKLKG (monthly recode for number of weeks looking for work)
RM1-4ESR (monthly recode for employment status)
RM1-4HRSWK (monthly recode for the number of hours worked).

For example, in Wave 5 Rotation 2, people with jobs or businesses starting in May 2002 were mistakenly assigned RMESR > 5 (no job in May 2002) and RMHRSWK = 0 (did not work in May 2002), even though most of them have earnings from a job/business for that month (note that some people have legitimate zero earnings in the month that a job starts because of a lag in the time of their initial receipt of wages).

Resolution of the Problem:

If this problem affects your analysis, the following options are recommended:

1) Exclude these cases from the analysis,

or

2) Create new recodes or individually correct the variables/recodes for the cases affected by this problem by using the edited values for the starting and ending dates of their jobs and businesses.
