2001 Panel Waves 1 - 5 Longitudinal Health Insurance Core User Note

Statement of Problem 1:

In Waves 1 - 5 of the 2001 Panel, the universe for variable EHIOLDKD (Coverage of older child outside the household) was "a child/children aged 18 years old or older."

Statement of Problem 2:

In Waves 1 - 5 of the 2001 Panel, the universe for variable EHIYNGKD (Coverage of younger child/children outside the household) was a "child/children aged 17 or younger."

Resolution of Problems 1 and 2:

States differ in the age they consider a child/children to be eligible for Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Because of these differences, beginning in Wave 6 of the 2001 Panel, the EHIOLDKD variable age limit for a child was increased from: age 18 years or older to: 20 years or older. The EHIYNGKD variable age limit was increased from: age 17 or younger to: 19 years or younger. This age change matches the requirements for CHIP therefore providing more consistent data.
