Statement of Problem:
In the 1996 Panel within the Assets and Liabilities Topical Module, variable EALTB captures "the total balance or market value (including interest earned) of the respondent's 401k and Thrift Savings Accounts held in own name." This variable was not included in the 1996 Panel Wealth/Net Worth Recodes within the Assets, Liabilities, and Eligibility Sections, which provides household level amounts.
Resolution of Problem:
Beginning in Wave 3 of the 2001 Panel, the household level recode variable (RHHTHRIF) was added to the Wealth/Net Worth Recodes within the Assets, Liabilities, and Eligibility Sections. Recode RHHTHRIF captures the information collected in variable EALTB on a household level.
RHHTHRIF has also been added as a component of the Total Wealth recode RHHTWLTH. RHHTWLTH is used to determine the Total Net Worth recode RHHTNW.
Beginning in the 2004 Panel, variable EALTB, and in turn the recodes RHHTHRIF, RHHTWLTH, and RHHTNW, will also include information for respondents who have a 403b plan.
