inventories/sales ratios will be revised based on the results of the 2000 Annual Trade Survey.  
Revised unadjusted and corresponding adjusted data are scheduled for release on May 3.

Sales

January 2002 sales of merchant wholesalers, after adjustment for seasonal variations and trading-day differences but not for price changes, were $225.2 billion, up 1.2 percent (+/-0.5%) from the revised December level, but were down 3.7 percent (+/-1.5%) from the January 2001 level. The December preliminary estimate was revised downward $0.1 billion or 0.1 percent. January sales of durable goods increased 1.3 percent (+/-0.9%) from last month, but were 4.8 percent (+/-2.4%) below a year ago. Compared to last month, sales of lumber and other construction materials were up 4.6 percent and furniture and home furnishings were up 4.2 percent. January sales of nondurable goods increased 1.1 percent (+/-0.7%) from December, but were down 2.5 percent (+/-1.8%) from last year. Sales of petroleum and petroleum products were up 4.5 percent from last month, while beer, wine, and distilled alcoholic beverages fell 3.3 percent.

Inventories

Total inventories of merchant wholesalers, after adjustment for seasonal variations but not for price changes, were $287.7 billion at the end of January, down 0.2 percent (+/-0.3%) from last month, and were down 5.1 percent (+/-2.4%) from a year ago. The December preliminary estimate was revised upward $0.2 billion or 0.1 percent. End-of-month inventories of durable goods were down 0.4 percent (+/-0.4%) from December and decreased 10.3 percent (+/-2.2%) from last January. Compared to last month, inventories of motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts and supplies were down 1.1 percent and metals and minerals, except petroleum decreased 1.6 percent. Among nondurable goods, petroleum and petroleum products increased 4.5 percent and beer, wine, and distilled alcoholic beverages were up 1.9 percent.

Inventories/Sales Ratio

The January inventories/sales ratio for merchant wholesalers, based on seasonally adjusted data, was 1.28. The January 2001 ratio was 1.30.
