Media Advisory — Census Bureau to Release Local 2010 Census Data Via FTP Download and American FactFinder
Public Information Office
Redistricting Data Program
Online press kit
During February and March, the Census Bureau will release local-level 2010 Census population counts for all 50 states, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. We have adapted our data release process to meet the needs of reporters and the public.
Per procedure, each state's geographic products and redistricting data are first delivered to the state's leadership, such as the governor and majority and minority leaders in the state legislative body. The Census Bureau will issue an advisory about a week in advance regarding the next week's planned data shipments. As a service to the public, we will now also issue an advisory notifying media when we ship the data to each state. In addition, after we have confirmation of receipt of the data by state leadership, usually within 24 hours of shipment, we will release the full data set to our FTP download site at the same time that we issue the news release with top line data for that state. Within 24 hours of that release, the data will also be available on American FactFinder, the Census Bureau's online data search tool.
For each state, the Census Bureau will provide summaries of population totals, as well as data on race, Hispanic origin and voting age. These data will be presented for multiple geographies within the state, such as census blocks, tracts, voting districts, cities, counties and school districts.
According to Public Law 94-171, the Census Bureau must provide redistricting data to the 50 states no later than April 1 of the year following the census. As a result, the Census Bureau is delivering the data state-by-state on a flow basis. All states will receive their data by April 1, 2011.
