The Census Bureau currently offers three work schedules:

Flexi time Schedule

The flexi time schedule is a flexible schedule that consists of a five-day, 40-hour workweek. The workday is 8½ hours that include a non-compensable 30-minute lunch. The plan operates under the following terms:

  • Hours of work must fall between 6:30 am and 6:30 pm.
  • Core hours for regular day shift employees are from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday, with the exception of the 30-minute lunch period. All employees must be present at work during core hours, unless otherwise approved for leave, credit hours, or compensatory time off.
  • Regular day shift lunch periods will be between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm or near the mid-point of the shift or tour of duty for employees other than regular day shift. Supervisors may approve exceptions for unforeseen circumstances. The lunch period will be at least 30 minutes in duration.
  • Employees select a starting time between 6:30 am and 10:00 am.
  • Employees may deviate up to 30-minutes on either side of their established starting or ending time without prior supervisory approval, as long as all hours of work fall between 6:30 am and 6:30 pm.
  • Under the Flexi time schedule, employees are entitled to 8 hours of paid holiday time off for federal holidays.

5-4/9 Schedule

The 5-4/9 schedule allows employees to work 80 hours a pay period over 9 days during the regular work weeks and have the 10th day of the regular work weeks off. The plan operates under the following terms:

  • Employees select a set schedule of consecutive hours to work between 6:00 am and 7:00 pm (exception: the eight-hour day cannot begin until 6:30 am). The latest arrival time is 9:30 am. These starting times are specifically for day shift. Starting times will vary for other shifts throughout the day/evening.
  • The employee will work 9 1/2 hours a day for 8 days and 8 1/2 hours for one day during the pay period unless otherwise on approved leave. This includes 30 minutes for lunch.
  • The employee will normally have his/her day off on a Monday or a Friday unless otherwise approved by the supervisor. Employees may also choose to split the day off into two half days during the pay period.
  • Under the 5-4/9 schedule, employees on a Maxiflex schedule are entitled to a maximum of eight (8) hours of paid holiday time off for federal holidays regardless of their normal work hours, and employees on a Fixed schedule are entitled to holiday pay equivalent to the number of hours of their approved work schedule.

4/10 Schedule

The 4/10 work schedule allows employees to choose a set schedule (subject to supervisory approval) to work 40 hours per week over 4 days with 1 day of the regular workweek off. The 4/10 schedule operates under the following terms:

  • Employees select a set schedule of consecutive hours to work between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 pm for each of the four days. The latest arrival time will be 8:30 am.
  • Employees will work 10 ½ hours a day (this includes a 30-minute non-compensable lunch period) for the four days during the workweek unless otherwise on approved leave.
  • Employees will normally have their day off on a Monday or a Friday, unless otherwise approved by the supervisor. Employees may not split their day off.
  • Under the 4/10 schedule, employees are entitled to 10 hours of paid holiday time off for federal holidays.
  • Employees working a 4/10 schedule may telework subject to the provisions of the telework policy. Supervisors retain the right to limit telework days based on the work needs of the office and to ensure office coverage.
