Accessible ICT

All Information and Communications Technology (ICT) procured, developed, maintained, or used by federal agencies must be accessible. ICT covers a large scope of digital technology products:

  • Software and operating systems
  • Web sites and Applications
  • Telecommunications products
  • Video and multimedia material
  • Training materials
  • Documents, presentations, and official communication

Below is a non-exhaustive list of common non-website content distributed:

PDF

Portable document format documents must conform to applicable WCAG 2.0 success criteria. The Section 508 Program Office has assessed and remediated large PDF documents on behalf of other business units.

MS PowerPoint

PowerPoint presentations are ICT and as such must conform to Section 508.

Audio Video (Multimedia)

Multimedia must also conform to standards and several items such as captioning, synchronization, etc... must be considered. The Section 508 Program Office has assessed multimedia ICT assets for business units within the Census Bureau.

Mobile

Mobile devices and tablets have built in accessibility tools. Accessibility Technology users can use those tools, to navigate through digital content on their devices.

MS Word

All electronic documents including MS Word documents need to be Section 508 compliant.

MS Excel

Like any other electronic document MS Excel documents need to be accessible and Section 508 compliant.
