The mission of the Census Bureau Section 508 Program Office is to lead the Bureau and its staff to meet accessibility of Information and Communications Technology (ICT). Established in the fall of 2017, the Section 508 Program Office works to establish Section 508 as a multi-level service offering to all Census divisions to help meet accessibility needs.

Section 508 Certification

  • Section 508 Certification services for Census Information and Communications Technology (ICT) such as websites, pages, applications, widgets, documents, and official communication
  • Gives guidance on how to correct Section 508 issues within existing websites, apps and documents
  • Independent Validation and Verification (IV&V) for conformance reporting and non-compliance
  • Participates in Section 508 requirement reviews to attain a higher level of quality Assurance

Training

  • Provides assistance on Section 508 within acquisitions and solicitation
  • Facilitates digital accessibility and tools training to build awareness
  • Section 508 Compliant Management Process to Address Section 508 Related Complaints
  • Plays an advisory role during System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) Tailoring Sessions

Outreach

  • Help to achieve Section 508 and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 A/AA conformance
  • Performs scans and assessments for risk management
  • Roadshows to increase Section 508 awareness and knowledge
  • Access to assistive technology tools to enable Remediation Process
