1790 Census: Return of the Whole Number of Persons within the Several Districts of the United States

The information contained in the reports is not uniform for the several districts (States). For New England and one or two of the other States the population was presented by counties and towns; that of New Jersey appeared partly by counties and towns and partly by counties only; in other cases the returns were given by counties only. The United States summary table and the tables for the individual districts (States) and Territories show the number of free white males of 16 years and upwards including heads of families, free white males under 16 .years, free white females including heads of families, all other free persons, slaves, and total inhabitants.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
