Usability Testing of the ACS on Smartphones and Tablets - Phase II Mobile-Friendly Design

Written by:

Since people are increasingly using smartphones and tablets to access the internet, the Census Bureau evaluated the experience users faced when completing the American Community Survey (ACS) online using a mobile device. Respondents reported having difficulties answering some of the survey questions on a small screen. Based on the initial evaluation, Phase I, the Bureau identified several screens that could be redesigned to give users a better, more mobile-friendly experience. The purpose of this research study, Phase II, is to evaluate how users interact with the newly redesigned ACS screens that were optimized for improved access using a mobile device. The current research also compares user performance from Phase I and Phase II, before and after the optimized screens. Finally, the study aims to identify screens that continue to be challenging for respondents to complete using a mobile device.
