Chief, Regional Product Division Bureau of Economic Analysis

Ian Mead, chief of the Bureau of Economic Analysis' Regional Product Division, played a major role in developing BEA's new consumer spending by state statistics and the new quarterly statistics showing the economic activity generated by each state.

Mead also oversees the production of other BEA regional economic statistics, including information on the economic activity in all of the nation's metro areas as well as the production of another set of relatively new economic statistics at BEA - state-by-state and metropolitan data on people's incomes adjusted for inflation.

He has written research papers related to the development of different economic measures that would be useful to economists, businesses and policymakers and provide them with new analytical tools. Prior to joining the BEA in 2001, Mead served as the Administrator of the Census Bureau's Boston Research Data Center and a Visiting Scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. He received his bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Colorado in 1992 and went on to earn his Ph.D. in economics from Boston College in 2001.
