The 2020 Demographic Analysis estimates include national-level estimates of the population by age, sex, race and Hispanic origin as of April 1, 2020. These estimates are developed from current and historical vital statistics – birth and death records, estimates of international migration, and Medicare records. The Demographic Analysis estimates are independent from the 2020 Census and will be used to calculate net coverage error, one of the two main ways the U.S. Census Bureau uses population estimates to measure coverage of the census.

The Census Bureau conducted a webinar prior to the release of the first set of results from the 2020 Post-Enumeration Survey (PES) along with additional results from the 2020 Demographic Analysis (DA) estimates on March 10. The webinar explained the purpose, methodologies and types of results that will be made available from the PES and DA.

Note: Demographic Analysis estimates are only available for select race and Hispanic origin groups for the nation due to limitations in the historical vital statistics data used to produce these estimates.
There are two main ways of evaluating the quality of a census—comparing the results to other population totals and evaluating how well the process of conducting the census worked. Demographic Analysis is one of the population totals used to compare against 2020 Census results. The Census Bureau is also currently conducting a Post-Enumeration Survey, which will give estimates of the undercount by demographic group and geography. The first results from this survey are expected in November 2021.

“We have numerous quality checks built into the census – both in collecting and processing the data – and have updated plans for releasing information about quality along with the first results from the census, including releasing an unprecedented number of data quality indicators.”

“Demographic Analysis is useful for showing patterns about coverage across demographic groups. We can look at these within a census or across a census. DA has historically been used to highlight coverage differentials by race and the undercount of young children aged 0 to 4.”

“The methodology used to create Demographic Analysis estimates is built upon decades of extensive research and collaboration both internally and with expert demographers around the nation to make it the valuable tool it is today in evaluating coverage of the national population.”

“We will effectively kick off a decade of analysis to assess what worked and what didn’t work, using that information to lay the foundation for the best 2030 Census possible. And by releasing these 2020 Demographic Analysis estimates for the nation by age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin, we are also opening the door for researchers and the public to come to their own conclusions.”
