“The area of New Jersey was part of the original territory of the United States. It was originally chartered in 1664. West Jersey was split from New Jersey in 1676, but they reunited in 1702. New Jersey ratified the U.S. Constitution on December 18, 1787; it was the third of the original 13 states to join the Union, with generally the same boundary as the present state.”
