Blooming in May With Statistical Resources

This month we highlight data-filled resources related to Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Small Business Week, Mother’s Day, and more! Explore our educational activities using real-life statistics on the median ages of Asian American and Pacific Islanders and the percentage of U.S. moms who have completed high school or higher.

Small Business Week (May 1-7)

It’s Small Business Week! Mark the occasion by asking students what kind of business they would start – and why – if given the chance. Share our Adopting an Entrepreneurial Mindset activity with students, which shows them how to use the Census Bureau’s Business Builder Data Tool to analyze information entrepreneurs may consider when starting a business. This is a great resource to keep students engaged while learning how to work with data.

Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Did you know there are approximately 20 million Asian and 690,000 Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) residents in the United States? Share our Fun Facts handout with students that includes cool information like the total number of Asian- and NHPI-owned businesses in the United States and more. Use our accompanying teaching guide to find related activities to do with your classes!

Sharing Statistical Resources on Mother’s Day!

Did you know that roughly 35 percent of all U.S. women workers are mothers to children under 18 years of age? In honor of all moms everywhere, share our Mother’s Day Fun Facts related to their special day. Among other things, students will learn how many U.S. mothers hold bachelor’s degrees and the percentage of women with three or more children!
