Hurricane Maria originated from a tropical wave on September 13. In remarkably favorable conditions, on September 18, Maria underwent explosive intensification, doubling its sustained wind speed from 80 mph (130 km/h) to 160 mph (260 km/h), becoming a Category 5 hurricane, making the 2017 season the first since 2007 to feature two Category 5 hurricanes.
On Wednesday, September 20, 2017 the eye of the category 4 hurricane made landfall near Yabucoa, Puerto Rico.
