Written by:
Report Number ACSBR-017

Introduction

This report presents data on median household income and the Gini index of income inequality based on the 2021 and 2022 American Community Surveys (ACS).

Estimates from the 2022 ACS show a statistically significant decrease in median household income at the national level and for 17 states.  Median household income decreased between 2021 and 2022 for 8 of the 25 most populous metropolitan areas.  The Gini index was significantly higher in 2022 than 2021 for the United States and eight states. Real median household income increased between the 2021 and 2022 ACS in five states and one of the 25 most populous metropolitan areas.

The ACS provides detailed estimates of demographic, social, economic, and housing characteristics for states, counties, places, and other localities every year.
