National vacancy rates in the third quarter 2026 were 7.6 percent for rental housing and 1.2 percent for homeowner housing. The rental vacancy rate was higher than the rate in the third quarter 2025 (7.1 percent) and higher than the rate in the second quarter 2026 (7.3 percent).
The homeowner vacancy rate of 1.2 percent was virtually the same as the rates in the third quarter 2025 and second quarter 2026 (1.2 percent each).
The homeownership rate of 65.5 percent was not statistically different from the rate in the third quarter 2025 (65.3 percent) and not statistically different from the rate in the second quarter 2026 (65.0 percent).
