Special Announcement: Now Available

We are pleased to announce the availability of two new data tools for the Building Permits Survey data. First, the ability to download custom datasets from our data visualization tool has been enabled. Check it out now by creating a custom dataset on our data visualization page and selecting the bottom right download button.

In addition, we have released a “Master” data set on our FTP site that contains the entire Building Permits Survey data combined into one large CSV file. This file is intended for power users that want everything available in one file. Since this file is large, we highly encourage reading the documentation file and checking out the sample file provided prior to downloading. The FTP site can be accessed by selecting the "ASCII files by State, MSA, County or Place" link below.

These new options are available now. Check them out and see which is right for you! If you have feedback or questions, please Email us!

Notice of Methodology Change

With the January 2022 data month, the monthly Building Permits Survey design has changed from a representative sample to a cut-off sample. This change allows complete local and county data on new housing units authorized by permits to be published monthly going forward. Initial summary level estimates were first released with the New Residential Construction release on February 17, 2022. Complete local, County and State estimates were released on this page on February 24, 2022. For additional details on this change and the impact on New Residential Construction, see our Methodology Change FAQs.

This page provides data on the number of new housing units authorized by building permits. Data are available monthly, year- to- date, and annually at the national, state, selected metropolitan area, county and place levels. The data are from the Building Permits Survey.
