International Trade (annual 2005 - present, monthly 2013-present)

Time Series Data

The International Trade Datasets provide detailed trade data between the United States and its international trade partners. The most current monthly and annual trade statistics are available in the Monthly International Trade Datasets (MITD) and Annual International Trade Datasets (AITD).

Monthly International Trade Datasets (January 2013 – present)

The Monthly International Trade Timeseries Datasets provide the most comprehensive current month and cumulative year-to-date export and import statistics using multiple commodity classification systems. The Monthly International Trade Datasets currently have statistics from January 2013 to present. Previously released trade data are revised annually with the publication of April statistics.

Note: The endpoint splitting will not affect the annual international trade datasets.

Annual International Trade Datasets (2005 – present)

The Annual International Trade Datasets were developed for use with the U.S. Census Bureau’s World Population Clock. The Annual International Trade Datasets currently have statistics from 2005 to the most recent available full year of data.  Previously released trade data are revised annually with the publication of April statistics.

Data Collection & Methodology

Data on U.S. exports of merchandise from the U.S. to all countries, except Canada, are compiled from the Electronic Export Information (EEI) filed by the U.S. Principle Party of Interest or their agents through the U.S. Customs' Automated Commercial Environment (ACE). Filing the EEI is mandatory under Chapter 9, Title 13, United States Code. Qualified exporters, or their agents, submit EEI data by automated means directly to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Data on U.S. imports of merchandise are compiled primarily from automated data submitted through the U.S. Customs' Automated Commercial Environment (ACE). Other sources of import data include import entry summary forms, warehouse withdrawal forms and Foreign Trade Zone documents. Data on imports of electricity and natural gas from Canada are obtained from Canadian sources.
