Latest Annual Wholesale Trade Report

Notice of Correction: We identified two errors in the annual wholesale estimates that were originally released on February 28, 2013. Corrected tables were uploaded to our website on Thursday, May 23 at approximately 7:00 AM. Below is a summary of the errors that describes the industry levels and data items that were affected.

• For the years 2003 through 2009, the sales estimates for the NAICS 424 (total non-durable wholesale) subsector were not equal to the sum of the 4-digit NAICS industry levels that comprise NAICS 424. Note that all detail industry levels were correct as well as the aggregate levels NAICS 42 (total wholesale) and NAICS 423 (total durable wholesale) in those years. Items which are derived from the sales series (including gross margin, gross margin as percent of sales and operating expenses as percent of sales) were also incorrect at the NAICS 424 level for the same time period.
• For the year 2002 only, estimates for the NAICS 4246 (chemical and allied products merchant wholesalers) for U.S. manufacturers' sales branches and offices were incorrect. This also affected the aggregate estimates for NAICS 424 (total non-durable wholesale) and NAICS 42 (total wholesale) for U.S. manufacturers' sales branches and offices in the year 2002 only. Items which were affected included sales, inventories, purchases, operating expenses and gross margins. All tables that included estimates for U.S. manufacturers' sales branches and offices in 2002 were affected. Tables that exclude U.S. manufacturers' sales branches and offices were unaffected by this change.
• Data for electronic markets, agents, brokers, and commission merchants were unaffected.
• No sampling variability estimates were affected by these errors.
