File Sizes and Image Dimensions

Learn about maximum file sizes that can be uploaded to the Digital Asset Manager (DAM) and recommended image dimensions for thumbnails.

On This Page:

Banner Hero CTA and Headline Feature Dimensions

Components that use larger images, such as Banner Hero CTA (Call-to-Action) and Headline Feature, should be a minimum of 1920 x 1080. The size of the image should still remain 2 MB or less when uploaded to the DAM.

DAM File Sizes

All files in the DAM should be 2 MB or under. Files larger than 2 MB should be placed on FTP instead, where there is no file size limit.

External Images

Authors have the ability to link to images stored on FTP using the External Image component. Images added to pages with this component display in their original dimensions. Because of this, the images do not conform to Layout Containers and they may expand outside of the available template width. It is recommended that images have the following widths:

  • Census Detail 3 Column Template: Width of 655px or less
  • Census Detail 2 Column Template: Width of 1000px or less
  • Census Article 2 Column Right Template: 770px or less

There is no restriction on the height of the images.

Thumbnail Dimensions

All thumbnail images on census.gov must be in a 16:9 format. Below are recommended sizes:

  • 1280 x 720
  • 1920 x 1080

Thumbnails should be at least 1280 x 720 to ensure image clarity. The size of the image should still remain 2 MB or less when uploaded to the DAM.

Visualization Dimensions

Static Visualizations and Infographics

Static images, such as infographics, that are not being used as a thumbnail do not need to follow the 16:9 format. Instead, these images should have a width of 1000px. There is no limit on height, but 600px is the recommended height if authors would like the entire image to show without visitors having to scroll on the page.

Interactive (Tableau) Visualizations

When developing interactive Tableau visualizations for census.gov, the following guidelines should be followed:

  • The dashboard should have a width of 1000px so visitors do not encounter a horizontal scrollbar.
  • If being embedded onto an America Counts story page, a width 770px is required. If the width exceeds that, a screenshot of the visualization will be used instead and then linked to the full Library Visualization page.

There is no restriction on height, but 600px is the recommended height if developers want visitors to see the entire visualization on a desktop or laptop without having to scroll up and down.
