Annual Data - Excel Format

Beginning with Annual 2019, the units and valuation files are combined into an Excel format. Text versions will no longer be produced.

The 2014 Universe includes approximately 20,100 permit-issuing places and is used from January 2014 forward.

* Universe refers to the number of permit-issuing jurisdictions canvassed for the Building Permits Survey. The universe is updated every 10 years. Data prior to 2004 can be found under the Historical Data tab.


Annual Building Permits data are released on the 1st workday of May for the previous year. The data available at the time of the annual release are at the U.S., Region, State, Metropolitan Area, County, and Permit-issuing Place levels. Data are available for all Counties and Permit-issuing Places. Revised monthly estimates for the U.S. and Census Regions for the prior year which have been "benchmarked" to the final annual totals are also released.
