💻 About the 2030 Census

Planning for the 2030 Census is underway and we are listening to diverse voices - like yours. For the first time, the public can formally give input on planning and designing the next census.

The U.S. Census Bureau conducts the decennial census—the once-a-decade population and housing count of everyone living in the United States—as mandated by Article 1, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution.

Every census takes years of planning and preparation and we are currently in the Design Selection phase of 2030 Census planning. This phase includes research, testing, and operational planning and design work to inform the selection of the 2030 Census operational design.

Now Is the Time: Share Your Ideas With Us

As announced in a Federal Register Notice posted August 17, 2022, everyone is encouraged to provide input. The 90-day response window closes on November 15, 2022.

Through the Federal Register Notice, the Census Bureau is looking for recommendations on:

  • Reaching and Motivating Everyone to Respond —especially historically undercounted populations
  • Technology
  • New Data Sources
  • Contacting the Public
  • Providing Public Support

🎯 Audiences

Thank you for helping us spread the word and thank you for encouraging others in your network to share their ideas.

Each census takes years of planning and preparation. It’s critical that everyone's ideas are heard now as we lay the groundwork for the 2030 Census.

Partners and stakeholders can use this section to customize audience-specific messages. Below you will find key messages to work with and questions to ask several audiences.

Academics and Survey Researchers

  • Your comments and recommendations are key for planning and designing the next census. As announced in a Federal Register Notice posted August 17, 2022, everyone is encouraged to provide input now through November 15, 2022. The Census Bureau will use this input to inform decisions on the 2030 Census operational design.
  • Help spread the word and encourage others in your network to share their ideas.
  • The Census Bureau is doing a deep dive on 2020 Census Data Quality. This involves evaluating operational quality metrics, analyzing the results of the 2020 Demographic Analysis and Post-Enumeration Survey, thoroughly reviewing census operations, and asking outside experts to independently review our work.
  • 2030 Census planning is underway. The Census Bureau is currently in the Design Selection Phase. This phase includes research, testing, and operational planning and design work to inform the selection of the 2030 Census operational design—the big picture plan for conducting the census. They expect to decide on the initial 2030 Census operational design in 2024.
  • The Final Planning Phase is scheduled to start in 2025. After the initial operational design is developed, the Census Bureau will continue to develop their detailed operational plans and conduct tests as needed to ensure the census produces quality, useful information for the nation.

Here are some questions to think about when providing feedback:

  • What additional data sources (administrative records or other data sources) and methods for using them could increase census operational efficiency and effectiveness and improve data quality?
  • What tools and messages should the Census Bureau use to invite people to respond to the census, especially historically undercounted populations?
  • How could the Census Bureau tailor messages to maximize the number of households responding on their own
  • How often should the Census Bureau reach out to each household?

  • What are your needs when responding to the census?
