The Manufacturing and Trade Inventories and Sales estimates are based on data from three surveys: the Monthly Retail Trade Survey, the Monthly Wholesale Trade Survey, and the Manufacturers’ Shipments, Inventories, and Orders Survey. The purpose of this report is to provide broad and timely measures of combined changes in domestic retail trade, wholesale trade and manufacturers' activities. It provides the only source of monthly data on total business activities of retail trade, wholesale trade, and manufacturers.

Notice of Revision - Revisions to the Retail estimates for sales and inventories were released on September 28, 2026, and are reflected in this release. Revisions to the Wholesale estimates will be released October 26, 2026, and will be reflected in the September 2026 MTIS release scheduled for November 17, 2026. Estimates are revised based on historical corrections and the results of the 2023 and 2024 Annual Integrated Economic Survey.

Special Notice - Due to schedule and resource constraints, revised historical data and the seasonal adjustment models for the Manufacturers’ Shipments, Inventories, and Orders (M3) Survey will remain unchanged for the remainder of 2026.

API - The URL for the economic indicators data in the Census Bureau API (Application Programming Interface) has been updated to add /timeseries/. Examples can be found on the Developers’ webpage.
