Manufacturing and Trade Inventories and Sales

The Manufacturing and Trade Inventories and Sales estimates are based on data from three surveys: the Monthly Retail Trade Survey, the Monthly Wholesale Trade Survey, and the Manufacturers’ Shipments, Inventories, and Orders Survey. The purpose of this report is to provide broad and timely measures of combined changes in domestic retail trade, wholesale trade and manufacturers' activities. It provides the only source of monthly data on total business activities of retail trade, wholesale trade, and manufacturers.

Intention to Revise - Revised historical data from the Manufacturers’ Shipments, Inventories, and Orders (M3) Survey will be issued on May 16, 2025. These revisions result from: benchmarking the M3 shipments and inventories data to the 2022 Economic Census (EC) data on a 2017 NAICS basis, as well as to revised ASM data from 2018 through 2021, resulting from benchmarking the ASM to the 2022 Economic Census. Revisions to the Manufacturing estimates will be reflected in the April 2025 MTIS release scheduled for June 17, 2025.

Notice of Revision - Monthly retail estimates were revised to reflect historical corrections and reflect the restated results of the 2022 Annual Retail Trade Survey. Estimates were restated to incorporate the 2017 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) changes. In addition to the 2017 NAICS changes, the restated data represents employer-only firms to be aligned with the Annual Integrated Economic Survey (AIES) and the Economic Census. For a detailed description of these changes, please see the Restatement Summary. Publication tables were reformatted to incorporate the 2017 NAICS definitions. Revised not adjusted estimates and corresponding adjusted estimates were released on April 25, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. EDT. Revisions to the retail estimates are reflected in this release.
