Presidential Management Fellows Program

Informed decisions require good data. The Census Bureau provides just that -- timely, relevant and quality data about the people and the economy of the United States.

In addition to taking a census of the population every 10 years, the Census Bureau conducts eight censuses on economic entities and governments every five years. We also carry out more than 200 hundred demographic and economic surveys on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.

In support of our mission to serve as the leading source of quality data about the nation’s people, the Census Bureau strives to find highly qualified candidates from diverse backgrounds. For the past 27 years, the Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program and its predecessor, the Presidential Management Intern (PMI) Program, have been attracting outstanding masters, law, and doctoral-level students to the Federal service. The PMF Program seeks candidates who display excellent communication, interpersonal, planning and analytical skills, decision-making ability, and the potential to perform in leadership positions. This rigorous two-year paid program includes 80-hours of training each year, rotational opportunities, challenging assignments, and opportunities to network between agencies.

The Census Bureau is supportive of the PMF program and has a strong commitment to training and professional development. Current and former PMFs work in numerous positions throughout the Bureau and engage in a variety of diverse tasks. As a PMF at Census, you could have the opportunity to work with current data on topics such as unemployment, business productivity, poverty, and health insurance. This data has a profound impact on policy formation, evaluation, and decision making in both the public and private sectors.

The Census Bureau is located two miles outside Washington, D.C. in a new state of the art building. The Suitland Metro rail station, adjacent to our facility, provides convenient access to downtown DC. The Bureau also offers free parking, an on-site fitness center, childcare center, alternative work schedules and expanding telework opportunities.

Additional information on the program, including detailed information regarding eligibility and the PMF selection process are available on the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) website.
