Most 2026 Census Test positions will last several weeks or months. They feature:

Based on your answers to the application and assessment questions and the availability of work in your area, you may be considered for one, some, or all 2026 Census Test positions.

Job Qualifications and Conditions

To be eligible for a 2026 Census Test job, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a valid Social Security number (SSN).
  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Have a valid email address and phone number.
  • Complete an application and answer assessment questions.
  • Be able to speak, read, and write in English; however, bilingual applicants are needed and are encouraged to apply.
  • Be registered with the Selective Service System or have a qualifying exemption, if you are a male and born after December 31, 1959.
  • Undergo fingerprinting and pass a criminal background check and a review of criminal records performed by the Census Bureau.
  • Commit to completing training.
  • Be available to work flexible hours, which can include days, evenings, and weekends.

Most jobs require employees to:

  • Have a valid driver's license and access to a vehicle, unless public transportation is readily available.
  • Have access to a computer with internet and an email account (to complete training).

If you are being considered for a position, you will be asked about your current employment. Your current job must be compatible with Census Bureau employment and not create conflicts of interest or schedule. Each potential conflict of interest will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Also, engaging in any partisan political activity while on duty is prohibited.

If you are a veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces and were separated under honorable conditions, you may be eligible for veterans' preference. Job Offers Extended: Most job offers will be made between January and April 2026. However, job offers could be extended earlier or later, based on need.

Job Descriptions

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise census takers.
  • Monitor their progress and performance.
  • Ensure that the quality of work is maintained and that work is completed on time.
  • Use Census Bureau-issued devices (e.g. smartphones or tablets) to conduct their work.
     

Hours: Schedules typically follow regular business hours but offer flexibility. These positions may also require working shifts on specific days, evenings, or weekends.

Location: Some work can be done from home, while other work is done in the field and requires travel to various locations. Supervisors will conduct field observations, follow-up on issues in the field, and perform other fieldwork as required.

Hiring Timeline: Most job offers will be made between November 2025 and February 2026. However, opportunities may periodically become available due to employee turnover or changing needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Visit households and knock on doors.
  • Speak with and conduct interviews with residents.
  • Use electronic devices (such as smartphones and tablets, issued by the Census Bureau) to record answers to the census questionnaire and update addresses.
     

Training: Applicants who are hired will receive training before beginning work.

Hours: Schedules are flexible. Most positions require availability to work in the evenings and on weekends.

Location: Work is done in the field and requires travel to various locations.

Hiring Timeline: Most job offers will be made between January and April 2026. Training dates will vary based on the operation you are hired to work on. Once you complete the onboarding process and become an employee, you will receive more information about training dates and expectations.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and conduct training sessions in virtual and/or in-person classroom environments.

  • Monitor daily training activities.

  • Review trainees’ learning metrics.

  • Make recommendations for additional training if necessary.
     

Hours: Schedules are flexible.  Most positions require availability to work during the day, in the evenings, and on weekends.

Locations: Work may be completed at home or at locations throughout the community that provide space

Hiring Timeline: Most job offers will be made between November 2025 and February 2026. However, opportunities may periodically become available due to employee turnover or changing needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with community-based organizations.
  • Promote response to the 2026 Census Test questionnaire and available jobs.
  • Attend local events, staff booths at local events, distribute information and talk to the public.
  • Staff Mobile Questionnaire Assistance locations and help the public complete the online 2026 Census Test questionnaire or interview the public and make entries in the online questionnaire.
  • Use an electronic device to review reports and maps, use e-mail to communicate with other staff and organizations and complete other job tasks. 
     

Hours: Schedules are flexible. Most positions require availability to work during the day, in the evenings and on weekends.

Location: Work is done mostly in the community. Some work may be completed at home.

Hiring Timeline: Job offers will be made periodically throughout the 2026 Census Test. Opportunities may become available due to employee turnover or reassessment of needs.
