The Nonemployer Statistics by Demographics (NES-D) provides information on selected economic and demographic characteristics for nonemployer businesses and business owners by sex, ethnicity, race, and veteran status for the nation, states, and metro areas. The NES-D is not a survey; rather, it leverages existing individual-level administrative records to assign demographic characteristics to the universe of nonemployer businesses. Demographic characteristics including sex, ethnicity, race, veteran status, owner age, place of birth, and U.S. citizenship are assigned to nonemployer business owners.

Datasets include:

• Statistics for Nonemployer and Employer Firms. Provides data for nonemployer businesses by sector, sex, ethnicity, race, veteran status, receipts size of firm, legal form of organization, and Urban and Rural classification of firm for the U.S., states, and metro areas. Additionally, provides data for the total number of businesses and receipts by demographics by combining employer data from the Annual Business Survey (ABS) with nonemployer data from the NES-D. Data for counties and economic places are available for 2022.
• Owner Characteristics of Nonemployer Firms. Provides data for owners of nonemployer firms by sector, sex, ethnicity, race, and veteran status for the U.S., states, and metro areas, including detailed owner characteristics. Data for counties and economic places are available for 2022.
