In this participatory class, our staff will walk you through various ways of accessing data from the American Community Survey (ACS) via three of our data tools -- data.census.gov, the Census API, and the Microdata Access Tool.
This course will begin with an overview of ACS data topics and availability, then transition into finding tables using the Census Bureau's main data dissemination platform, data.census.gov. You will learn the two main ways of finding ACS tables through data.census.gov, and discover tips and tricks that will make finding ACS data easier.
Next, you will learn the basics of the Census Application Programing Interface (API) and build queries to pull data points from the ACS API. The API is a useful tool for data users pulling individual data points, grouping multiple tables in a single query, and using Census data in a third party software or app.
You will then pivot to the Microdata Access Tool (MDAT), which allows you to build custom tables using ACS variables and geographies. MDAT is helpful for data users who are not finding specific estimates of interest within the tabulated data tables in data.census.gov or the API.
Data users should have some familiarity with the ACS before participating in this course. This course covers the basic functionality of data.census.gov, the Census API, and the Microdata Access Tool. Time is allotted throughout the training for questions, and participation is strongly encouraged. Using two monitors is recommended.
