School Enrollment in the United States: 1971 (Advance data)

Report Number: P20-234

(Advance data, October 1971 survey)

Among the 108.7 million persons 3 to 34 years old in the civilian noninstitutional population in October 1971, there were approximately 1.1 million enrolled in nursery schools, 3.3 million in kindergartens, 33.5 million in elementary schools, 15.2 million in high schools, and 8.1 million in college.

A considerable proportion of persons both above and below the compulsory school attendance ages were enrolled in school in October 1971. Among the 3- and 4-year old children, 21 percent were enrolled in school and among persons who were 18 and 19 years old, 49 percent were enrolled in school. Almost all children of the compulsory attendance ages, 7 to 15 years old, were attending school. These results are based on the Current Population Survey conducted in October 1971 by the Bureau of the Census.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
