26 College Towns Have Both Men’s and Women’s Teams in NCAA Tournament

In 1896, the first college basketball game was played. Now, 127 years later, March Madness 2023 draws 68 men’s and 68 women’s teams from more than 350 NCAA Division 1 basketball colleges.

This year, 26 schools have double madness as both their men’s and women’s teams were selected. 

The state with the most men’s teams this year? Texas with seven: Baylor, Houston, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas A&M-CC and Texas Southern.

Here’s a handy data-finding tip for all D1 basketball college towns: locate each school’s home city and state on this list and check out their profiles at data.census.gov/profile.

  • Among the Associated Press (AP) Top 25 men’s and women’s teams, eight are from colleges on both lists: UCLA, Texas, Arizona, Gonzaga, UConn, Tennessee, Indiana, and Duke.
  • The state with the most men’s teams this year? Texas with seven: Baylor, Houston, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas A&M-CC and Texas Southern.
  • The eight men’s First Four teams: Arizona State; Fairleigh Dickinson (New Jersey); Mississippi State; University of Nevada; University of Pittsburg; Southeast Missouri State; Texas A&M-Corpus Christi; and Texas Southern University.
