Stephen Buckner is the Associate Director (acting) for Communications at the U.S. Census Bureau.
The Communications Directorate is responsible for the dissemination of statistics and information about the Census Bureau’s mission to the public, businesses and members of Congress through marketing, public relations and digital, online and social media channels.
Buckner previously was Chief of the Center for New Media and Promotions, where he directed the transformation of the Census Bureau’s website and launching of new data dissemination tools and mobile apps to make important statistics about American’s people, places and economy more easily accessible. Prior to that, he was an Assistant Division Chief in the Public Information Office, where he managed the 2010 Census media relations campaign and served as the bureau’s principal spokesperson.
Buckner joined the Census Bureau in 1998 as a media partnership specialist in the Atlanta Regional Office. He was responsible for public affairs and media relations activities during the 2000 Census for the state of Florida.
Prior to joining the Census Bureau, Buckner was an account manager and executive for several public relations agencies representing clients as diverse as the City of Miami, British Airways, Marriott Hotels & Resorts, and Florida Power and Light.
Buckner received his master’s degree in public administration from Florida State University and bachelor’s degree in public relations from the University of Florida.
