How much do the areas that had the biggest impact from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma typically represent of the Nation’s new manufactured housing?
Annual estimates of manufactured home shipments by state show that shipments to dealers in Florida and Texas together represented about 22% of U.S. manufactured home shipments in 2016.
Does the Census Bureau produce monthly estimates of Manufactured Housing Survey for the affected areas?
No. Data from the Manufactured Housing Survey are from a sample survey that is designed to create monthly estimates only at the national level and for the four Census Regions. Monthly counts of the numbers of homes shipped to dealers are compiled from manufacturer's reports to the Institute for Building Technology and Safety (IBTS) and are available by state.
How was the collection and estimation of Manufactured Housing Survey data for May affected by the hurricanes?
Data were collected in September on the average sales price, intent, and placement status of a sample of homes that were shipped to dealers in May. Response for these cases was lower than normal in areas affected by the hurricanes, especially in Texas. Data were imputed for nonresponding cases using the normal methodology.
Did the Census Bureau alter the procedures for developing seasonally adjusted estimates of shipments of manufactured homes?
No.
Will FEMA homes be counted in the Manufactured Housing Survey?
Homes purchased by FEMA are counted as shipments by the IBTS. The Manufactured Housing Survey does not survey these units; they are included in the 'For Non‐Residential or Other Use' category.
Are manufactured homes that are shipped to Puerto Rico included in these statistics?
If homes manufactured in the U.S. are shipped to Puerto Rico (or any area outside the 50 states and District ofColumbia), they are counted as shipments by the IBTS but are not included in the Manufactured Housing Survey
estimates.
