Students will learn about businesses on their island and compare the number of fast food restaurants across all Island Areas. They will also learn about the data the U.S. Census Bureau collects and why it is important to get an accurate count of the people living on their island.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Recognize and count numbers up to 100.
  • Compare quantities, using the terms “more than,” “less than,” and “equal to.”
  • Understand the concept of community and how distributing resources relates to the number of people living in a community.
  • Identify different types of businesses found in a community.
  • Understand the importance of being counted in the decennial census.

Materials Required

  • Printed student worksheets
  • Markers or other coloring utensils
  • Chart paper or a whiteboard or blackboard with a writing utensil
