‘Tis the season to engage with statistics! Bring statistical cheer to your classroom by sharing our activities with students introducing them to fun statistics like the number of places with festive-sounding names and the total number of toymakers in every state as they count down to winter break.

Explore U.S. Places With Festive-Sounding Names!

Did you know the population of Santa Claus, IN was 2,586 in 2020? For this warm-up activity, students can answer questions about festive-sounding U.S. places and organize them by geographic regions. What other festive-sounding places do you know?

How Many Toy Makers Are in Your State?

There were 495 doll, toy, and game manufacturing establishments in the United States in 2021. How many were there in your state? Students can find out by participating in this warm-up activity. For this activity, they pretend they’re starting a toy manufacturing company and use the info they discover to decide and describe where they want to start it and why.

Take a Walk in a Census Bureau Winter Wonderland!

Students can test their knowledge with this Kahoot! game that showcases festive Census Bureau data on things like U.S. businesses that primarily sold toys and games, the state with the most skiing establishments and more holiday-related data.

Dive Into Festive Fun Facts for the Holiday Season!

Shopping season is underway. Prepare for the holidays with our Fun Facts. Did you know there were about 4,000 department stores in the United States in 2021? This and other holiday-related statistics such as the number of U.S. hobby, toy, and game stores are in our Holiday Season Fun Facts handout. Students can also learn which country led the way with U.S. imports of Christmas decorations and the median earnings of first-line supervisors and retail sales workers. December 21 – National Crossword Puzzle Day

Did you know crossword puzzles are a great way to expand your knowledge? Enjoy a classroom break before the holidays with our Census Crossword puzzle that will expand students’ statistical vocabulary as they become familiar with terms like population and survey related to collecting and using Census Bureau data.

National Candy Cane Day – December 26

Did you know that December 26 is National Candy Cane Day? Celebrate this sweet occasion by having students explore our State Facts for Students data tool to learn how many candy and nut stores are in their state.
