Building a Data-Centric Business Ecosystem

We are transforming our approach to creating statistical data products. For centuries statistical agencies mainly relied on surveys to meet the nation’s data needs. Today’s technology allows us to use a wide variety of survey, administrative, and other data--often data we have already collected. This allows us to respond more effectively to the rapidly evolving needs of the nation.

The four key innovation areas include:

  • Data Ingest and Collection for the Enterprise (DICE) simplifies data collection
  • The Frames Program enables us to use our data in more innovative ways
  • The Enterprise Data Lake (EDL) centralizes data management and processing, enabling more efficient access and use of our data
  • Census Enterprise Dissemination Services and Consumer Innovation (CEDSCI) makes our data more accessible

Publishing Data in User-Friendly Ways

Census Enterprise Dissemination Services and Consumer Innovation (CEDSCI) develops and implements state-of-the-art tools for discovery, visualization and dissemination of statistical products to the public.

By allowing for discovery of statistical products and new visualizations and renderings of data, CEDSCI delivers a scalable solution for long-term data dissemination and provides a modern user experience that makes complex information simple to understand.

CEDSCI gives a better experience for the data user through three modes, including the Census Data Application Programming Interface (API), web-based applications such as data.census.gov, and table creators such as our Microdata Access Tool (MDAT).

Modernization benefits include:

  • Trusted Source: We strive to be a recognized and discoverable source for data, establishing credibility and trust by being linked to by 3rd party channels.
  • Improved User Experience: User-friendly interfaces are key to the success of an open data platform by attracting data users to interact with the site, engaging users with intuitive navigation, and encouraging return visits.
  • Open and Transparent: Building an open platform means fostering communication about our identity, operations, and future plans, promoting transparency and trust.
  • User Driven: Users and market forces actively shape the platform's capabilities and data products through direct feedback and site interactions, ensuring alignment with their needs.
  • Standards and Governance: Through clear roles, responsibilities, and standards CEDSCI ensures program efficiency and user satisfaction without compromising data integrity.
  • Reliable: Our system operates smoothly with minimal manual intervention, ensuring timely and incident-free data and code releases as part of our standard processes.
