1920 Census: Volume 1. Population, Number and Distribution of Inhabitants

This is the first volume of the 11 final reports of the Fourteenth Census, taken in the year 1920. The statistics and other materials found in these volumes are based upon data originally issued as advance bulletins for population, agriculture, irrigation, drainage, manufactures, and mines and quarries.

Volume I, Population, contains statistics on the number and distribution of inhabitants, and the population of counties, incorporated places, and outlying possessions. The tables include data showing area and population of counties or equivalent divisions, urban and rural; population of incorporated places and wards of incorporated places having 5,000 inhabitants or more; population of cities and other incorporated places having 2,500 inhabitants or more, arranged in groups; population of counties by minor civil divisions; and population of outlying possessions by civil divisions.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
