Written by:
Report Number ACS - 44

Introduction

The retail workforce has a substantial presence in the American labor force. In 2018, 9.8 million workers were employed as either retail salespersons, cashiers, or first-line supervisors of retail sales workers. They are also some of the most common occupations in the United States.

This report provides a detailed description of the demographic and employment characteristics of retail workers using the most recently available data from the 2018 American Community Surveys(ACS) 1-year estimates, as well as the 2000 Census and 2010 ACS 1-year estimates. This report focuses on the numbers and characteristics of some of the most common sales and related occupations—first line supervisors of retail sales workers, cashiers, and retail sales persons, collectively referred to in this report as retail workers.
