Disability and the Differential Impact by Age and Sex on Work: A Portrait of Older Persons Working with a Disability

Written by:
Working Paper Number SEHSD-fy2016-002

Introduction

A substantial minority of older people with a disability continues to work past 62, yet there is little research on the occupations they work in. Using the full microdata file from 5-year 2010-2010 American Community Survey (ACS) sample, on the population 62 and over, this descriptive study examines the work characteristics of older workers with disabilities by age, sex, number of disabilities, and by type of disability (hearing loss, cognitive impairment, ambulatory difficulty). Findings show that compared with people with other disabilities, a greater share of older people with hearing loss worked in Management occupations and people with cognitive impairment were more concentrated in Building and grounds cleaning occupations.
