SEPT. 5, 2019 — The U.S. Census Bureau named new leaders and members to its National Advisory Committee on Racial, Ethnic and Other Populations  (NAC).

Dr. Julie A. Dowling began serving as NAC’s chair on August 1, 2019, after five years as vice chair. She is an associate professor in the Department of Latina/Latino Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Dr. James Thomas Tucker is Pro Bono Voting Rights Counsel to the Native American Rights Fund (NARF). He is an attorney with the law firm of Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker LLP in Las Vegas, Nevada.  He serves as an Adjunct Professor at UNLV’s William S. Boyd School of Law, where he teaches courses on voting rights and elections law. 

New NAC members are: Carla Kelly, Chiling Tong, Cherokee Bradley, Brad Cole, John Sandoval, Seth Sanders, Carol Hafford and Nicole Borromeo. They join NAC members: Gilberto Amaya, Charles Bruner, Inderdeep Chatrath, Jacob James Fitisemanu Jr., Morad Ghorban, Taeku Lee, Yolande Marlow, Meghan Maury, Stuart Michaels, Marc Morial, Thomas A. Saenz, Luc El-Art Severe and Lily Anne Yumi Welty Tamai.

The NAC is scheduled to hold its fall 2019 meeting at Census Bureau headquarters in Suitland, Md., November 7-8, 2019.

NAC advises the Census Bureau on topics such as hard- to- count populations, race and ethnicity, language, aging populations, American Indian and Alaska Native tribal considerations, new immigrant populations, populations affected by natural disasters, highly mobile and migrant populations, complex households, rural populations and population segments with limited access to technology. It also considers issues like data privacy and confidentiality.
