The 2017 Census Test allowed the Census Bureau to research new methods and advanced technologies to improve data collection during the 2020 Census. The Census Bureau contacted 80,000 housing units throughout the nation to test new internet systems, including new tribal enrollment questions. The test included over-sampling of tribal areas.  For this test, Census Day was April 1, 2017.

• Evaluate ways to optimize self-response methods using the internet— the most efficient and least costly response option. The 2017 Census Test used web-based technology, such as the Internet, smart phones, and tablets to improve question designs, and to optimize reporting.

Note: On October 18, 2016, the U.S. Census Bureau released the 2020 Census Memorandum 2016.21 documenting the 2020 Census Program’s decision to remove two field tests' operations for the 2017 Census Test.
